THE REGAL NEWSLETTER No 5

Dear Friends,

The Regal played host to three weekends of films over May and welcomed well over 1,500 people through its doors. Not only is it fantastic to see the Regal working again but more importantly demonstrating that great demand exists for the Regal to be fully restored and operational.  We would like to thank everyone who supported the project by coming to see a film over the past month.

Through showing films we have raised public awareness and been lucky enough to recruit more volunteers ready to help the cause. In particular we have met people with expertise in plaster moulding and intricate woodwork, people are already hard at work repairing the damaged organ vent beside the screen and putting a plan in place for the restoration of the main entrance doors.

Work has continued on developing the website if you take the time to look at our gallery new pictures are available, along with a fashion shoot we held several months ago. Some great film memorabilia is also up for grabs in our shop!

Over the coming weeks we are hoping to bring the new Robin Hood film along with Sex and the City 2 to The Regal, so keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events.

Many thanks

Laurence Wiper

THE REGAL NEWSLETTER No 4

Dear Friends,

As we write this letter we are in the middle of our May Bank Holiday film run. In fact, here in our office we can clearly hear the sounds of Sandra Bullock’s Oscar winning performance in The Blind Side resonate through the Regal’s auditorium walls.  We made a point of informing you all about how lucky we are to have a film booker of Mike’s calibre onboard. He has been pivotal in allowing The Regal to obtain ‘first release films’. Over the weekend of 17th and 18th May we played Avatar and Sherlock Holmes among other titles and welcomed just under 400 people through the doors. The highlight this weekend has been Nanny Mcphee and The Big Bang, 214 people came out to support the project, an astonishing number and one that bodes extremely well for the future. We cannot express the excitement and gratitude your support has given us. We have planned film showings every other week until the end of June, there are too many titles to mention but here are a few Invictus, Green Zone, A single man, Astro Boy and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The Regal’s commitment to align itself with schools from the local area continues as we welcomed students from the Vale of Evesham School. There questions and perception of what a newly restored Regal could provide to the local community were razor sharp. We are looking forward to a point in time where we can offer schools of Evesham a venue to exhibit there multi media art work.

Many thanks,

Laurence Wiper

THE REGAL NEWSLETTER No 3

Dear Friends and Supporters of The Regal Cinema,

We are all very excited to announce our upcoming Easter Films. For the holidays we are showing:

Friday 9th April1:
1
.00pm Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief – PG
6.00pm The Hurt Locker – 15

Saturday 10th April:
1
.00pm Avatar - 12A
6.00pm Sherlock Holmes – 12A

I
feel it is noteworthy to highlight that our film titles are becoming more current. This is due in no small part to the relationship with our new film booker; Mike has a wealth of experience having worked in the industry for over 30 years. He feels passionate and understands what we are all trying to achieve at The Regal. It is of the upmost importance to an independent cinema to have such a relationship with a film booker.  With this in place we can get any film, therefore we look forward to bringing an array of modern film titles to Evesham. If you have a particular film you would like to see please email your suggestions to myfilm@theregal.ac so we can put the films you want on.

At the beginning of the month we had our first fashion shoot (possibly the Regal’s first as well) Approached by local make up artists, hair stylists, a fashion photographer and model  who all wanted to use the Regal’s unique back drop to develop their portfolios. We happily let them in and can’t wait to see the results of their work on that very cold Sunday. So keep a look out on the website for the photos. It’s definitely another example of how this landmark building can be utilised in so many different ways.

The ghost hunt on Friday 19th March was a huge success, every ticket was snapped up! Although a ghost hunt may not be everyone’s cup of tea they certainly had a great time exploring the building. In fact they have already re-booked to do it all again! We want to express our gratitude to Spiritus for organising the event and donating the proceeds.

Many thanks,

Laurence Wiper

THE REGAL NEWSLETTER No 2

Dear Friends and Supporters of The Regal Cinema, welcome to our second newsletter.

We were very pleased to have been approached by local company Spiritus (their shop is number 85 on the High Street) with an offer of support. The Regal will hold its first Ghost Hunt on the 19th March at 7.30pm, an introductory talk on the characters that worked at the famous cinema will be made by Rob Hemming author of Shazam. Admittedly the event may not be to everyone’s taste but we cannot thank them enough for their generosity as all proceeds go directly back into the restoration. As we go to press only a very few tickets are left.

We welcomed Inclusion Care our ‘corporate friends’ to the cinema for a tour of the premises. It was a great pleasure to show them around and talk about our plans. We are very excited not only by their generosity and belief in the project but how our working relationship will develop once we’re open.

The website has been overhauled with improvements made through out. Please take the time to have a look; our photo gallery is growing, video footage of The Regal’s TV appearances available, current working drawings and a link to our new ebay shop offering Regal memorabilia.

New photos are available online from photographer David Yates. David approached us about taking photos of the ongoing restoration, he specialises in derelict buildings of all things! His photos in black and white capture The Regal’s best ornamental decorations providing some really atmospheric shots. The current pictures are from his first visit but he’s already been back and we can’t wait to see what he captures in the next batch.

We are pleased to announce the involvement of Ward William Associates (WWA) Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers since 1974. With offices in Evesham, London, Bristol, Truro and Plymouth employing over 50 surveyors. WWA will assist the developments, programming, procurement and cost control of the restoration.

As you may have read in the local press we will not been opening in June, we are still waiting for final conformation from AWM. Learning from past experiences we are reluctant to forecast a revised opening date and will not now do so until we have signed contracts with AWM. As soon as we have this you will be the first to know, we will then announce our opening date.

We look forward to a busy month.

Many thanks,

Laurence Wiper

THE REGAL NEWSLETTER No 1

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our first newsletter.

Over the coming months we will be issuing regular monthly newsletters now that building work at the Regal is imminent. These will provide you with all the information you need to stay abreast of events. We will inform you how the restoration is developing, and what needs to get done before everyone can start enjoying the cinema again.

Firstly, many people have asked why nothing has happened since we became involved with The Regal, and questioned whether the cinema will ever open again. Whilst from the outside it may appear very little has happened, all of you who have come into the building are very well aware that this is far from the case.

The cinema was in a terrible state of disrepair when we took over. Following 8 years of abandonment, total neglect and an uncertain future, the hard work of recent months has transformed the Regal into a space which is now useable. For this reason, we have taken the opportunity to put on a few events, which have been well supported. These events have helped in many ways: creating public awareness; proving the Regal as a viable commercial venue of the future; showing us how best to use the space; generating a strong database of contacts and raising funds to restore the landmark building.

Most of all, it has given us time to 'live' at the Regal. Watching people’s movements and use of the building during events has allowed us to adapt and improve our original scheme in several important ways. These new ideas include: art exhibition space, increasing the luxury and space of circle seating, improving the stage capacity for live events, and the coffee shop design on the ground floor. At the same time we have worked closely with our architects to obtain planning permission, listed building consent, detailed working and structural drawings.

I am sure you are all aware of the friendship schemes available. We have been very encouraged by your generosity in becoming Friends of the Regal. These schemes help to form the backbone of the community that will use the new Regal. We are sure you will enjoy all of the privileges when we are open.

People have offered their time and skills in all manner of ways: repairing the leaking roof, making the building water tight, extermination of all the pigeons and removal of guano, identified, repaired and preserved the original fixtures and fittings including doors, gas lights, mouldings etc cleaned and stripped the entire building, reinstated the water and electrical supplies, installed alarms and locks, built a customer database, an interactive website. We can’t thank you all enough: it has essentially readied the building for the major refurbishment.

When all this is said, embarking on projects of this size, it is inevitable that you encounter delays of some sort. The Regal is no different but rest assured that we, Wychavon DC and all other bodies involved have been working overtime to bring the Regal back to life.

We are all confident that building works will begin soon. We are in the final stages of grant approval and inevitably this process has taken longer than had been hoped. But we really are nearly there! Everything else is ready to go. As soon as we receive grant funding, scaffolding will be erected, the new roof will be installed and all the internal works will begin.

As for the immediate future, comments made recently have led us to a regrettable decision to cancel the Rock Night on 19th February. We have decided to replace the event with film screenings to be announced soon. Following our signing of contracts with major distributors, these will include major current films, we hope you enjoy them.

If anyone would like more info on this, please come and see me at the cinema or give me a call.

Regards,

Laurence Wiper
